Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon

Sturdy and versatile red cabernet worth considering.

Winery:  Columbia Crest

Variety:  Cabernet Sauvignon

Star Rating:  3 Stars

Region:  Washington

Price:  $10 to $12 per 750ml bottle (expect to pay $4 to $6 per glass)

Food Pairing:  Beef, steak, and also can enjoy with dark chocolates

Tasting Notes:  A little spice but not overwhelming, the tannins and light oak hints blend well.  There is an undertone of chocolate that will pop out if you drink while eating a piece of dark chocolate.  If I owned a restaurant, this wine would be my house cabernet.2003_ge_cabsauv_bottle.gif2003_ge_cabsauv_bottle.gif

Variety:  Viognier

Star Rating:  4.0 Stars

Region:  California

Price:  $7 to $9 per 750 ml bottle (expect to pay $5 per glass)

Food Pairings:  Light white fish, butternut squash, or risotto

Tasting Notes:  This is a great value wine that was recently purchased for $9 at a local wine shop.  Every time you taste this wine you will find new notes of light peach complemented with a buttery vanilla and clove flavored tones.  Viognier makes a nice, rich white wine that is typically blended with other white varieties.  Smoking Loon does a nice job representing Viognier as a single variety.  For your money, you need three bottles on hand in your cellar.

Marques de Casa Concha

Awesome red cabernet sauvignon for the money.

Winery:  Marques de Casa Concha (second label to Concho y Toro Don Melchor)

Variety:  Cabernet Sauvignon

Region:  Chile (Maipo Valley)

Food Pairings:  Steak, Tomato Sauces, Strong Cheeses

Price:  $14 to $21 per 750ml bottle (expect to pay $7 per glass)

Tasting Notes:  If you like a bold red wine, this one is a winner.  Nicely integrated tannins, toasty french oak brings in some mocha hints, and well balanced acids.  Your friends that like red will taste this and say “what was the name of this one again?”  Seek out the 2004 vintage if available and just buy it.  I served this wine at our last New Years party.  Red wine drinkers loved it.
